In a study from recently the University of Hong Kong which was recently published in Frontiers in Microbiology, researchers scraped banknotes to determine what kind of bacteria grow on them (and yes, you have to at least say that you’re a researcher to get funding to do that kind of stuff).
And to the surprise of absolutely no one, I’m sure, they concluded that yes, banknotes do carry significant amounts of bacteria.
Not only that, some of them are “potentially” dangerous including some that were antibiotic-resistant, which is of course, the stuff of nightmares.
Really only three things you can do with that information.
- Ignore it
- Wash your hands every time you handle any money
- Just give all your cash away.
And as a measure of good will, I am happy to take any dirty bills you have off your hands.
