Prevention always trumps treatment

Since this is being posted at the start of a new year, when many people have likely resolved to make some healthy changes to their lives, I think it may also be a good time to point out that according to many good studies and surveys, many chronic illnesses that are generally thought of as occurring only in older people – heart attacks, strokes, colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and others are – surprisingly – increasing significantly in prevalence among ever younger people  around the globe.

And because so many chronic illnesses are tightly linked to poorer lifestyle habits (smoking, drinking excessively, use of some drugs, sedentary behavior, rising weights), it’s vitally important for young people to understand that although the treatment of many chronic conditions is improving, a really good mantra to live by is that “prevention always trumps treatment” (the only case in which the use of “trump” is actually a good thing).
