Watch Out: Your Sleeping Pills are Dangerous

A Chinese study has concluded that in the elderly, the use of sleeping pills, something that millions of us elderly do, raises the risk of pneumonia, a serious and potentially life-threatening complication, particularly in the elderly.

One possible explanation is that the use of anything that relaxes muscular tissue, as sleeping pills do, can also relax the esophageal sphincter, the muscle band that separates the esophagus from the stomach and which prevents acidic stomach contents from refluxing back up the esophagus and potentially to the lungs.
