In The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Tuco , who is submerged in a bathtub and is about to be shot by a man who is hunting him, shoots the man first and then offers a great motto to live by: “If you’re gonna shoot, shoot. Don’t talk.”
Which is a great way to introduce a recent study in JAMA cardiology that showed quite clearly that if you need to take statin drugs, and so many of us do because of abnormal cholesterol levels, then they work well but only if you take them as prescribed.
In this study, statin takers who were sporadic in their adherence to the statins were up to three times as likely to die during the monitoring period as were the regular statin takers.
The reason this is newsworthy is that so many people have been scared off taking statins because of a media obsession with statin side effects, which do occur, of course, but are likely to be far less problematic than media reports as well as social media regularly have it.
So easy bottom line here: If after a good discussion with your family doc, you decide that you need to take statins, take them regularly, don’t fool around with skipping doses.
