French national data published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal found that roughly “twice as many people were admitted to hospital for COVID-19 at the height of the pandemic than were for influenza at the peak of the 2018/2019 flu season”, and that the death rate among COVID-19 patients was almost three times higher than the death rate from flu during that severe flu storm, way more COVID-19 patients were admitted to ICU than during that flu season, and the COVID-19 patients in ICU spent significantly more time in the ICU than their flu counterparts.
And remember, since COVID-19 has continued to ravish France while the 2018/19 flu settled significantly when the weather warmed in the spring, these disparities only got worse with time.
This data will, alas, not convince any of theCOVID-19 deniers and COVID-19 delusion-ers out there because nothing convinces someone who doesn’t want to be convinced.
But it is what it is, as they say.
Stay safe – the cavalry is on-call for most of us.
