Eating a lot of ultra-processed foods is bad for you

I’m shocked, shocked to learn that eating a lot of ultra-processed foods is bad for you.

But that’s exactly what researchers in Italy have concluded from an 8-year-long study of over 22,000 Italians, and yes, apparently even in Italy, where access to great food – Mediterranean diet stuff – is a near as your corner groceteria or even better, 3 fabulous cafes on your block, a lot of Italians are still eating a lot of, well, I think the technical term is “crap”.

But according to this study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, compared to people who do not eat a lot of ultra-processed foods, those who do have a 26 % higher risk of dying from any cause, and and a whopping 58 % higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

As I said, shocking, what?
