This might surprise you if you have diabetes

Although the leading cause of death in diabetes has always been said to be cardiovascular disease – heart attacks and strokes – a new report from an 18-year-study of over 300,000 people with diabetes in England, which was published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology , has concluded that cancer is now the leading cause of death in diabetes.

In addition, over the last year for which data was gathered, people with diabetes were more likely to die from dementia, liver disease, or respiratory disease than people without diabetes.

Why has cancer shot to be the number one cause of death in diabetes?

Probably because of the steady gain in weight that all people including diabetics have shown over the last couple of decades, and while weight gain clearly negatively impacts the risk of getting cardiovascular disease (CVD), it also significantly impacts the risk of being diagnosed with some type of cancer, probably more than for CVD.
