A major risk factor for COVID-19 severity

According to the Guardian, a not-yet published paper from Italy claims that healthcare workers with obesity produced only about half the amount of antibodies in response to a second dose of the jab compared with healthy people.

Why would that be?

Perhaps because obesity is often associated with other health problems that may impact the risk for and response to COVID-19, so obesity may just be a marker rather than a direct cause of this drop in antibody production.

More likely, though, is the probability that some of the metabolic changes that obesity produces also raises the risk for problems with COVID-19.
