According to a new report in the CMAJ, lots of you may be taking your anti-histamines “incorrectly”.
That’s especially pertinent at this time of year when so many of us are suffering allergy-associated symptoms, something that for most of us will go on all summer at least to some extent.
So here’s the main point these experts make about this amazingly commonly-used medications, namely that while antihistamines are very effective to relieve symptoms of hay fever and hives, they are not nearly – or at all – as effective in symptoms associated with asthma, eczema, or insomnia.
And anti-histamines are not effective for treating coughs.
For all the aforementioned problems, you should be using treatments specific to those.
