COVID-19 is not your dad’s flu, not even your grand-dad’s flu

According to new data from the (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, life expectancy for Americans fell by a year and a half in 2020, the largest one-year decline since the second world war.

And while other factors undoubtedly contributed to this fall in life expectancy, most notably the overuse of opioids, the CDC explained that nearly 3/4 of this change came from the coronavirus pandemic.

And to starkly illustrate the disproportionate effect of this pandemic on certain populations, although for white Americans, this drop represented the greatest decrease since the boys were sent off to defeat Hitler, for black Americans, it was the greatest drop since the Great Depression, and for Hispanics (whom the CDC has not been tracking as long), the greatest drop ever.
