Spotlight on Sports Medicine
Hey, ladies, you know what’s even better to possess than strong ties, strong drinks, even strong men?
The answer is strong bones, especially in your senior years, in part, I suppose cuz by then having strong men and strong drinks doesn’t offer nearly as much appeal as it once may have, but the reason strong bones get even more desirable with age is that the stronger your bones, the less risk of suffering a fracture, which can not only cause lots of chronic pain and permanent disability, but some fractures can even kill ya so that 20 % or so of seniors who fracture their hip will die within 6 months of that fracture.
So how do you get stronger bones for your schmooze-and-snooze-in-the-shmall years?
Well, according to one study of women over the age of 50, those women who’d done the most weight-bearing sports when younger, especially sports that involved jumping, like volleyball and basketball, had much stronger bones than women who hadn’t involved themselves in such sports when younger, and although I’m gonna jump to the conclusion that jumping up and down lots every day is probably a strategy that comes a bit late for most of my listeners to adopt, it`s not too late, folks to get your daughters and even yer sons to start doing that.
As a good parent, your motto should be this: let em leap for later in life.
Beats the pants off “just do it” eh.
