The heart of the matter

Not only a great novel by Graham Greene but a good summary of our future health care risks because according to the American Heart Association, despite the pandemic – and also because of the pandemic – heart disease is still and will long remain the world’s number one killer.

So even in an era when SARS-CoV-2 has been killing so many people, it would still have to go a long long way to come even close to matching how many people cardiovascular disease kills annually.

And sadly, because of the lifestyle restrictions that COVID-19 has led to – especially because of less chance for so many people to exercise regularly, a tendency to eat poorer diets, a tendency for weight gain, and of course, the steep drop in testing and seeing doctors to get appropriate treatment – it is likely that instead of receding, cardiovascular disease rates are only going to get worse over the next few years, and perhaps longer.
